Premier Rachel Notley confirmed yesterday that Grande Prairie will host the 2018 Alberta Summer Games. Roughly 2500 athletes and coaches along with fans will be in the area providing an estimated economic boost of 3m dollars. The games will be co hosted by the City of Grande Prairie and the County of Grande Prairie.

“Two summers from now, about 2,500 of the province’s fastest, strongest, and most gifted athletes, aged 11-17, will descend upon Grande Prairie for three days of intense competition,” – Notley

The local bid committee is pretty stoked, and chairman Lionel Robins is quoted as saying the estimated economic figure could be exceeded!

“It’s going to be more than that. That’s an average. If we’ve learned one thing about our Grande Prairians, it’s that we don’t do anything average. She said it’s going to be 2,500 people and $3 million, it’ll be 5,000 people and $10 million impact,”

The province has already committed $420,000 for the games through Alberta Sport Connection, which includes a cultural grant of $70,000.

More information on how you can get involved will likely be available soon, as these events typically take 1000-2000 volunteers.
