At the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year event in Los Angeles on Friday, Sammy Hagar couldn’t contain his admiration for Jon Bon Jovi’s exceptional songwriting prowess. Speaking to Billboard on the red carpet, Hagar enthusiastically commended his longtime friend, highlighting their shared musical roots and penchant for anthemic choruses.

“We were buddies forever, and I don’t ever remember having any kind of Internet argument or anything with Jon,” Hagar joked, emphasizing their harmonious relationship. “We came from the same school, we sing the same kind of way, we’re screamers, we write big choruses that make people want to sing along. He’s just younger and better looking than me.”

Expressing genuine appreciation for Bon Jovi’s dedication and generosity, Hagar underscored the Bon Jovi frontman’s often-overlooked work ethic and philanthropic endeavours.

The evening honoured Jon Bon Jovi as the guest of honour, with Hagar among the musical talents paying tribute to the iconic rocker. Performing a rendition of “You Give Love a Bad Name” alongside guitarist Orianthi, Hagar showcased his admiration for Bon Jovi’s timeless hits.

Reflecting on Bon Jovi’s extensive catalogue, Hagar humorously admitted, “Yeah, all of ’em,” when asked if there were any songs he wished he had written instead. Specifically, he praised “Wanted Dead or Alive” for its coolness and the undeniable appeal of “You Give Love a Bad Name.”

The star-studded event also saw the presence of music luminaries like Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Melissa Etheridge, and others, with notable figures such as Matthew McConaughey, P!nk, and Ed Sheeran sending pre-taped messages of admiration for Bon Jovi.

Closing the night with his trademark humour, Bon Jovi reminded the audience, “As I look out here at all you tuxedoed executives, I remind you this is a Bon Jovi concert. We don’t sit down.”
