6 years ago today, on December 3rd, 2015, we lost Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland. He was 48. In the beginning there was some confusion surrounding his death but it was later confirmed that he passed due to an accidental overdose of cocaine, alcohol and methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA). The band was on tour at the time. He had a history of multi-substance dependence, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and asthma, which according to the reports, may have contributed to his death.

After his former bandmates from Stone Temple Pilots learned of his passing, they posted a letter on Facebook that read:

“Dear Scott, Let us start by saying thank you for sharing your life with us. Together we crafted a legacy of music that has given so many people happiness and great memories. The memories are many and they run deep for us. We know amidst the good and the bad you struggled, time and time again. It’s what made you who you were. You were gifted beyond words, Scott. Part of that gift was part of your curse. With deep sorrow for you and your family, we are saddened to see you go. All of our love and respect. We will miss you brother — Robert, Eric, Dean.”

Scott Weiland was part of some of the most influential rock music that the 90s had to offer. Howard Stern sums it up very well in this video.

This Sunday, December 5th, you can join us in celebrating his like on the Sunday Night Vinyl Series. We’ll be playing Stone Temple Pilots’ debut album Core, from front to back.

Core was released in September 1992 and is STP’s best selling album to date. The album is loaded with hits, including: “Creep”, “Dead & Bloated”, “Plush”, “Sex Type Thing” and “Wicked Garden”. The album went to #3 on the Billboard 200 Charts, was ranked #11 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums. STP won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist in 1993 and they took home a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1994 for “Plush”.
