Self-confidence is important, just ask Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. In the latest issue of Classic Rock magazine, Farrell was asked who he believes to be the most underrated band in history. His pick? Jane’s Addiction.

To his credit, he does have some justification for his pick, elaborating that he seems to believe that Jane’s Addiction had more room to spread their wings as one of the all time greats but he was the one who stunted that growth.

“It’s because I went crazy and broke the band up at their height. I was operating on instinct and I just wanted to get away from those guys back then — I just wanted to do my own thing really bad. But it was an amazing project. And maybe it wouldn’t have been any better, but now I look around and think, “Damn, I should have been more productive in that area.”

This isn’t the first time he’s spoken of his own projects with such conviction. Back in 2016 Farrell also claimed that “we might not have sold as many records as Guns N’ Roses, but I’d say we’re every bit as great as Guns N’ Roses – some might argue we’re even greater.”

Obviously, Jane’s Addiction isn’t the only band Perry Farrell is a huge fan of. He lists their third album, Ritual do lo Habitual, as a contender for one of the greatest albums ever recorded, but also manages to squeeze in a few mentions of other bands — Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, Joy Division — as also being worthy competitors.

Jane’s Addiction will be one of the headliners of this September’s Beachlife Festival in California. It may be safe to assume no one is looking forward to that performance quite as much as Perry Farrell.
