A judge in LA has approved a settlement that will put the song “Happy Birthday to You” in the public domain. That ruling ends the claims of Warner/Chappel Music which has been collecting royalties on one of the World’s most known songs.

Last year it was ruled the music company didn’t own lyrics to the song, and had no right to charge for its use… the hardest part is that the company agreed to pay back 14 million dollars to everyone who paid licensing feeds to use the song.

So yes, for a time…when all those servers at the restaurant sang happy birthday, it was illegal, and terrible, but now…
