RCMP have released some information, encouraging you to talk to your children about safety, along with some practical things you can put in place in order to get them from ‘here to there’ safely. This after reports of adults approaching children in the City.

• Always walk with at least one friend
• Make sure your parent or, another responsible adult, is aware that you are out walking, where you’re going and when you’re expected to return
• If a stranger offers you a ride say “NO” and stay far away from the vehicle
• Have an alternate route in mind in case you run into difficulties
• Walk in well lit areas/ main streets
• Have a safe place to go within your neighbourhood, i.e. community centre, well-known, trusted friend/associate, school, public place
• Try and get a license plate number if you are approached by a strange vehicle
• If you have a cell phone, keep it on you and call for help if necessary

If you experience a suspicious interaction, please call the Grande Prairie RCMP at (780) 830-5701. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers by phone at 1.800.222.8477 (TIPS), by Internet at www.tipsubmit.com, or by SMS (check your local Crime Stoppers [www.crimestoppers.ab.ca] for instructions on how to do).
