Dave Grohl’s title of “Nicest Guy in Rock” stems from Ozzfest in 1998.

After a cancelation, Grohl & the Foo Fighters were asked to jump on the bill alongside Slayer, Pantera & Black Sabbath  Grohl was worried the band’s sound wasn’t going to fit the overall sound of Ozzfest & there would be what he described to Rolling Stone magazine as a “riot”.

The Foo’s followed Pantera that night & Grohl’s insecurities went away when he looked after and saw the guys from Pantera watching from the side of the stage and singing along.

After the show it was Dimebag Darrell who put the band at ease.

As Grohl recalled to Rolling Stone: “’From now on, everybody’s allowed in this room. I don’t care if it’s Britney Spears.’ I became the backstage best friend. Whenever I showed up at a festival, the first thing I’d do is grab a bottle of whiskey and go knocking on doors to see who the funniest people are. You’d be surprised who the real f***ing nutcases are.”
